A’Ibom Assembly Calls for Investigation of Man Murdered by Police at a Wedding

The several calls made by Akwa Ibomites to the Akwa Ibom state government to fish out the police man that shot one Mr Godwin Thomas at the traditional marriage of Governor Udom Emmanuel’s driver, Mr Bassey Edet at Ndiya Ikot Ukab, Nsit Ubium Local Government Area on Thursday, 7th November is yielding effort.

Today, Tuesday 12th, November the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly joined their voices to call for discreet investigation into the murder of the late Thomas who was a mascot at the event where he was shot by a yet to be identified policeman.

The member representing Etinan State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Aniefiok Dennis where the deceased hails from who brought the matter before the floor of the house pointed out that the deceased was an ardent supporter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state and wondered why he was gruesomely murdered for no reason.

He said, “We want proper investigation to be carried out by relevant authorities to uncover whoever is behind the killing of Mr Godwin Thomas and to ensure that no other person is killed in the state, unjustly”.

The Etinan lawmaker while lamenting Mr Thomas’ death, described him (the deceased) as a struggling young man, with a wife, three year old daughter, mother and father to cater for and urged the House to help uncover his assailant.

Speaker of the 7th House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey in a post made on his Facebook timeline shortly after the Tuesday’s plenary condemned the murder and disclosed that the house Committe on Security, Youth and Sports will liaise with security  agencies in the state to ensure the perpetrators are brought to book.

During the plenary, the Speaker Rt. Hon. Bassey condemned the killing and maintained the House will employ all legal means to bring the perpetrator of the crime before the law.

He said, “It is a very unfortunate situation. We will do all we can, within our powers to uncover the killer. That is what we were elected to do. The Police has issued a statement, likewise the state government. We (the House of Assembly) hereby condemn the torture and killing of Mr Godwin Thomas. We will do our part in this case.”

The Speaker therefore directed the House Committee on Security to interface with the State Police Command and other relevant security agencies to investigate the matter and ensure the culprit is arrested and prosecuted appropriately.
