Utang Akwa Ibom Unity Cup Opens Sunday

The 9th edition of Utang Akwa Ibom Unity Cup will today, 11th November kick-off at Afaha Offot Primary School, Abak road by 4pm.

The annual grassroot sport competition organized by the Special Assistant to Governor Udom Emmanuel on Entertainment Industry, David Sergeant better known as Utang Akwa Ibom is to help unify the people and also promote grassroot sport development among the locals.

Speaking with FactsreporterNG crew, the organizer, Mr Utang Akwa Ibom hinted that the annual sport competition which prior accommodated teams outside the ward will this year have only teams in the ward competing for the grand prize of N500,000.

“This year’s competition will be a two week long activity with teams cut across the nine villages in ward six competing for the mega prize of N500,000 which will be shared among the first, second and third place winners.

“Previous years we had accommodated teams outside Uyo but this year we want to specifically focus on teams in ward six in Uyo Local Government Area.

“For this year, it is opened for under 17 teams and presently nine teams have entered for the competition. He said

Utang further disclosed that the essence of the yearly sport competition is to encourage young people who have passion for sport and to help support their dream of being mega sport stars by giving them a platform yearly to show their skills through sport.

“Utang Akwa Ibom Unity Cup is basically a capacity sport development drive geared towards discovering, encouraging and building skillful sport stars from grassroot to national and international level.

“Our aim is to give young footballers in rural and urban Uyo an opportunity to show the World their versatility, skills and passion in football, hence, the drive of this project.

“We want to catch young footballers at the grassroot level, help them harness their potentials and probably expose them to national clubs so that sport development can continue to gainfully employed them and put Akwa Ibom State on a high pedestal in the international community. He said.

Also, Utang hinted that the opening ceremony will draw top government functionaries like the Chairman Uyo Capital City Development Authority, Prince Enobong Uwah; Hon Charles Udoh, Commissioner for Information & Strategy; Elder Imoh Okon, Chairman Uyo Local Govt Council; Hon. Akan Okon, Commissioner for Special Duties & Aviation Development; Elder Ufot Ebong, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor, Bureau of Technical Matters and Due Process; Comrade Ini Ememobong, Akwa Ibom State PDP Publicity Secretary; Hon. Anietie Eka, PDP Candidate for Uyo State Constituency, among others.

The event will be co-hosted by Edikan Inim and Channels TV Sport Analyst, Iniobong Monday.
